IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High Head Wrestling Coach Mark Reiland resigned on Monday, March 19, ending a 19-year career at West. Reiland won two state titles and was a four-time state-placer at Eagle Grove High School (1984-1987) and earned an NCAA championship in 1991 and two All-American honors while attending the University of Iowa.
He began coaching at West in 1999 and guided the Trojans to seven state championships: five dual team titles (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2011) and two traditional meet championships (2006 and 2007) and coached dozens of state qualifiers and place-winners including 16 state champions.
“I want to thank Coach Reiland for his service to our students at West,” West High athletic director Craig Huegel stated. “While the results are certainly impressive, Coach Reiland has had an immeasurable positive impact on the lives of those student-athletes fortunate to have wrestled for him and for Iowa City West.”
Huegel said the search for a replacement would begin by the end of the week.
The Trojans were defeated in a regional dual meet denying them a shot at the state duals this year, but qualified nine wrestlers for the individual tournament.
