Richard Gent

Richard D. “Dick” Gent, 74, of Tiffin, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial was May 29 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Cosgrove. The Rev. Edmond Dunn officiated. Burial followed in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, The Iowa SIDS Foundation or St. Peter’s Cemetery (for cemetery care).
Dick was born Feb. 23, 1940, at home in Keota, the son of Francis and Irma (Schulte) Gent.
He graduated from Keota High School and later met and married Jane Morford on Oct. 19, 1963, in Keota. Dick operated heavy machinery, including maintainers, snow plows and cranes for 34 years for Johnson County Secondary Roads, retiring in 1997. He also farmed since the mid 1960s.
Dick enjoyed a passion for restoring antique tractors, as well as collecting the miniatures. He participated in several Iowa tractorcades.
Survivors include his wife Jane; daughters, Denise (Denny) Mougin and Angie (Brett) Mehmen, all of Tiffin; grandchildren, Brandee Bohr, Alyssa Mougin, Hannah Mougin, Brevin Mehmen and Bryce Mougin; his siblings, Terry (Jo) Gent of Washington, Donna (Ronnie) Tinnes of North Liberty and Fred (Winnie) Gent of Carlock, Illinois; sister in law, Jean Yeries of Fort Collins, Colorado, Janice Maier of Iowa City and Joy (Ray) Kaefring of Oxford and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Ryan Mougin, brothers in law, Keith Morford, Kenneth Yeries and John Maier and his mother and father in law, Arch and Vivian Morford.
Dick was an honorable man. While he touched many hearts, his name was not synonymous with fame or fortune or glory. He was a simple, God-loving man asking only for the love of his family and the respect of his friends. He had both. Jane and the girls and their families were devoted to him long before he got sick. He knew that no matter what happened– it was his job on this earth to protect them and keep them safe. And he did that with grace and strength even while he fought for his own life during his long battle with Parkinson’s. To his multitude of friends, he was an example of what goodness and honor should be. Dick most recently made it known that one of his greatest joys was being married 50 years.
