Scherff wins Outland Trophy

I’m going to talk about something more positive... Brandon Scherff.
Brandon became the fourth Hawkeye to win the Outland Trophy award.
Calvin Jones won it in 1955, Alex Karras in 1957 and Robert Gallery.
I was only three years old when Alex won his award but I remember him playing for the Detroit Lions in the ‘60s.
Can you believe that Alex was runner-up to the Heisman Trophy in 1957?
John David Crow, a running back from Texas A&M, won the award that year. John only played in seven games in 1957 because of injuries and he finished with 562 yards rushing and scored six touchdowns. He also passed for five touchdowns.
Back in the ‘50s players played both ways, and John had five interceptions on defense.
Robert Gallery was a consensus All-American for the Hawkeyes and drafted second overall by the Oakland Raiders. Robert struggled at tackle, the position he was drafted, so he switched to guard and had a decent career.
Brandon was a high school quarterback when he was a sophomore at Denison. He switched to tight end his junior year and tackle when he was a senior in high school.
Brandon started at guard in three games as a freshman and was named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman team.
Brandon started seven games as a sophomore before being injured against Penn State and missing the rest of the season.
Brandon was named All-Big Ten and second team All-American as a junior and consensus All-American as a senior.
