Sean Connolly, 26, and his fiancé, Sarah, 27, died in a car accident on Highway 965 between North Liberty and Coralville on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008. Funeral service for Sean was held Monday, Dec. 22, at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger. Cremation followed the services.
Sean was born in Cedar Rapids to William and Diane (McInerney) Connolly. He grew up in Plymouth, Minnesota and moved to Granger at the age of 13. Graduating from Woodward-Granger in 2000, Sean participated in theatre, golf, jazz band, basketball, baseball, cross country, and choir. In high school he developed his love of science.
Sean graduated from Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, in 2004 with a double major in biology and chemistry where he was a Resident Assistant, played in the Jazz Band, and played intramural sports. While at Buena Vista he served an internship at the University of Iowa in the biology program, during which he met his fiancé, Sarah. After receiving his degree from BVU he began his graduate program at the University of Iowa working toward a Ph.D. in Immunology, which would have been completed in the fall of 2009. Sean and Sarah were planning an October 2009 wedding.
Sean is survived by his sister, Diana Kathleen Connolly of Granger, Uncle Mike and Aunt Sue (Connolly) Musich, who helped raise him, (and their children Sam and Nick) of Granger; his grandparents Richard “Shorty” and Helen Connolly of Granger, Dorothy McInerney of Highland Park, Illinois and Leonard and Mary Musich of Chicago, Illinois; and may aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Scott Connolly, his parents, Diane Connolly in 1994 and William Connolly in 1996 and his grandfather, Michael McInerney.
Visitation was held Sunday, Dec. 21 at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger where a vigil service was held at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a memorial to be established at the University of Iowa in Sean and Sarah’s names together.
