Senior Advocates host events at the library April 20
SOLON– You will want to join them at the library, Friday, April 20, not only for the movie “Iron Lady” and the always delicious catered meal from Savvy Coffee and Wine Bar; but to be on hand for Louis Picek of Main Street Antiques & Art who will present a show and tell of Czech memorabilia.
The Picek family arrived in the 1870s settling near the Scotch Grove Cemetery where they attended church. Louis grew up around the Cedar Rapids/Fairfax area attending College Community School His parents were both from Cedar Rapids, his mother’s family Vacek. His early exposure to antiques was in his mother’s antique shop near Fairfax.
His continuing interest in Czech pieces stemmed from his artistic background and a thirst for knowledge of ethnic histories and immigrations, which generated collecting from many ethnic sources. He particularly likes handmade pieces or folk art. He plans to bring a variety of items that will address the unique Czech heritage many embrace in our community.
Come early to view some of these pieces before we dine on shepherd’s pie and angel food cake roll with whipped cream and strawberries at 11:30 a.m. Following our meal we will view the newly released, award winning movie “Iron Lady” with Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. Following the movie Louis will take the stage as we dine on homemade kolaches. The catered meal will cost about $7. Please call 319-624-2710 for reservations.
