Senior Night sweep

IOWA CITY– Defense made the difference, said West High coach Randy Dolson. His Women of Troy swept Cedar Rapids Prairie 3-0 in a Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) match Tuesday, Oct. 21, at home. The win sweetened Senior Night where Madi Miller, Mikaela Morgan and Laynie Whitehead were honored for their contributions to West High volleyball.
West came from behind to take the first set 25-20 and overcame a late deficit to take the second set 25-22. The Women of Troy dominated the third set 25-12 for the win.
“Although there were some great offensive stats, it was the defense that sparked West to the victory,” Dolson said. The team put up 16 blocks and 64 digs in the effort. “(We) were able to slow down the Prairie attack with aggressive serving, great floor defense, and some timely blocks and play on the net.”
It was the second time in a week that West had plucked the Prairie Hawks after beating them 2-1 in the MVC Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 18. Prairie was ranked ninth in Class 5A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s weekly rankings issued on Thursday, Oct. 16, and were third in the Mississippi Division while West was second in the Valley Division and unranked in Class 5A. The match completed the regular season and gave West a 25-11 record overall while Prairie dropped to 21-13 ahead of regional play, which started on Monday, Oct. 27.
“This is just what we needed as we head into tournament play,” Dolson said. “This was one of our most complete wins and matches of the season.” The coach, in his first year with the program, added, “hopefully this will give us the confidence and momentum to make a deep run into the playoffs.”
