Solon 2nd, place 13 in home tournament

Linderbaum only champion, at Ed Hadenfeldt
Tyler Linderbaum in heavyweight finals match, beat West Liberty. Solon WL were tied going into this match.

SOLON– It was a respectable second-place showing for the varsity Spartans wrestling team.
Solon hosted its Ed Hadenfeldt Wrestling Invitational Saturday, Jan. 13, and while Lisbon captured the team title, the Spartans crowned one champion and placed a total of 13 on their way to runner-up.
“I thought our team fought up and down the lineup throughout the day,” noted Solon Head Wrestling Coach Blake Williams. “I was very pleased overall with how we wrestled. Although we fell a little short of the team championship, placing second ahead of some very good teams was a good indication of how well we wrestled.”
Senior Tyler Linderbaum was Solon’s lone champ at 285 pounds, while Mike Hoyle (182) and Zach Wegmann (220) both reached the championship match but had to settle for second.
Hoyle fell in a 9-1 major decision to undefeated Garet Sims of Iowa Valley, while Wegmann lost by fall to Logan O’Connor of Lisbon.
Backing them up was the rest of the lineup, with three third-place finishes, three wrestlers in fourth, two in fifth, a sixth and an eighth-place showing.
“It was a very competitive field once again this year with returning state champion Lisbon along with highly-rated West Liberty and Washington, as well,” Williams said.
Lisbon, with four champs and 211.5 points, had a pretty comfortable lead over the Spartans with 194 points. But the Spartans entered the last match at 285 pounds in a tie with West Liberty, and Solon’s Linderbaum was set to face off with Comet Andy Lopez for the title.
Linderbaum won with an 11-2 major decision, securing second place for the team.
“The best part of that match was Tyler looked to score the entire match,” Williams said. “Even though he was comfortably ahead, he scored a takedown with a few seconds left to earn a major decision. That is what we want all of our wrestlers to do, always look to score and to never sit on a lead.”
Christian Haight (132), Zach Bevans (152) and Jax Flynn (160) were all victorious in their third-place matches.
Haight was leading late in his match when Washington’s Dillan Sanders was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct, Williams said. Haight taken a 3-1 decision over Sanders earlier in the day.
At 152 pounds, Bevans lost by fall in the semifinals to Kaden Kilburg of Lisbon, but battled back to place third with pins against Isaiah Moncada of Iowa Valley and Nick Pearson of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
Flynn also fell in his semifinal but pinned Morgan Hartz of West Branch and Drew Slaymaker of Iowa Valley to capture third at 160 pounds.
Zeb Gnida (120), Aidan Dall (126) and Seamus Poynton (170) placed fourth for the Spartans.
Gnida lost a tough, 2-1 decision in his third-place match against Caleb Fuessley of Center Point-Urbana, while Dall dropped a 1-0 decision to Solon junior varsity (JV) teammate Colton Spillman.
Poynton managed a 6-4 sudden victory upset over West Liberty’s A.J. Lenz in the quarterfinal, but lost a 6-0 decision to Vinton-Shellsburg’s Kort Johnson to claim fourth.
“Seamus beat a very good wrestler from West Liberty first round,” Williams reported. “He came back from an early deficit and ended up getting a takedown in overtime to secure the win. He continues to get better each time he wrestles.”
Lucas TePoel (113) and Andy Brokaw (138) took fifth place for Solon, while Adam Bock (195) claimed sixth and Caleb Ebert (145) eighth to round out the Spartan scoring in the 13-team field.
“We had a lot of our guys place. When that happens, usually our team will do well,” Williams said.
Williams was pleased with the support his team received at home.
“There was a great crowd there all day,” he said. “The finals matches had many top rated individuals competing against each other. I think the fans definitely got their money’s worth.”
The Spartans head on the road Thursday, Jan. 18, to Epworth to face the Western Dubuque and Central DeWitt in a double dual and then compete in the Herb Irgens Invitational in Ida Grove Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20.
The dual meet with Clear Creek Amana and Center Point-Urbana originally scheduled for Jan. 11 has been rescheduled for varsity only Monday, Jan. 22, in Tiffin. Solon’s JV will be attending the WaMaC Conference JV wrestling tournament the same day at South Tama.
