SOLON– The boys took care of business at home against Maquoketa in a shutout, but narrowly escaped the Central DeWitt Sabers on the road.
Solon’s varsity soccer team improved to 11-3 with the two wins last week, defeating Maquoketa’s Cardinals 4-0 at Spartan Stadium May 1 and squeaking out a 3-2 overtime victory visiting Central DeWitt May 3.
The Spartans, currently ranked second in Class 1A by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association, will square-off with the top-ranked team, Iowa City Regina, in Iowa City May 10.
The Sabers were also ranked (No. 16 in Class 2A) and brought a 7-2 record into their home match against Solon, and those losses had come at the hands of other ranked teams (Center Point-Urbana and Dyersville Beckman).
According to the DeWitt Observer, the Sabers tied the game 2-2 at the end of regulation on a penalty kick when Solon was called for a push in the box.
Central DeWitt scored both of its goals on penalty kicks, including one to open the scoring.
Solon senior Isaac Vang knotted the score in the second half, and the Spartans took a 2-1 lead on a successful penalty kick by junior Luke Yetley after the Sabers were whistled for a foul in front of their goal.
Solon held the lead until the closing moments, when Central DeWitt attempted a corner kick with three seconds remaining, the Observer reported. The shot was knocked away, but the foul on Solon gave Central DeWitt senior Jesper Andreassen a chance to send the game to overtime, and he converted, the Observer stated.
The Spartans dodged a bullet a minute into overtime when Andreassen’s up-close shot on the goal struck the bar.
Three minutes into the extra period, Solon put an offensive run together and Luke Yetley’s shot found the back of the net for the 3-2 win.
Junior Jorel Justus and Luke Yetley had assists for the Spartans. Senior keeper Eric Weetman allowed the two goals on penalty kicks, but had five saves.
Earlier in the week against one-win Maquoketa at home, the Spartans applied continuous offensive pressure with 20 shots on goal.
Justus gave Solon a 1-0 lead a little over 12 minutes into the match with a clear shot from the top of the box, and the Spartans nursed the lead into halftime.
Senior Michael Donnan, junior Luke McInnis and sophomore Rodney Wittich added second-period goals to give Solon the 4-0 win. Junior Ben McAtee had the team’s sole assist.
Cardinal keeper Conner Schnoor recorded 11 saves, while Spartan goalie Weetman went untested.
The Spartans head to Vinton-Shellsburg Friday, May 11, and return to Spartan Stadium to greet Williamsburg Tuesday, May 15, to end the regular season.
