TIFFIN– The Spartan boys’ track and field team started the week on April 25 finishing runner-up under the sun in the Wildcat Boys Relays at Maquoketa Valley High School in Delhi with a few missing names due to college visits and family obligations.
The Solon runners and throwers finished the week on Thursday, April 28, as champions of the Pacha Relays, following some May showers and missing some members competing in the Drake Relays, at Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin in a field of nine other teams.
With the absence of Brandan Childs, Nate Christensen, Matt Roeder and Halston Durr, who spent the date at Drake, the Spartans played fill-in and saw several team members step up.
During the field events, Streeter McIlravy took second in the high jump clearing 6-0 and Adam Bock tied for fourth with a height of 5-8. Luke Ira cleared 20-4 1/2 in the long jump with Spencer Lawson taking fourth, leaping 19-11 1/2 on a second jump after a very scary first jump saw him crash to the sand on his side when his foot slipped on the board. Tyler Linderbaum, Solon’s sole competitor in the shot, hurled 46-1, good for fifth-place team points. The discus saw Solon’s Jacob Coons, Linderbaum, and Jackson Walker take first (141-2), second (139-10) and fourth (129-2), respectively.
The track events found Solon taking first in the 4x800-meter relay with the team of Jake Schaeckenbach, Ben Krutzfeldt, Adam Smith and Graeson Dall running an 8:29.13. The Spartan team of Ira, McIlravy, Lee Hanus and Bo Black captured third in the 440-meter shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:02.57. Keegan Hess grabbed fourth place and team points with a time of 11.95 in the 100-meter dash. In the 400-meter dash, Cole Paisley ran to fourth place with a time of 56.29. In the 4x200-meter relay, the Spartans’ team of Hess, Trevor Nelson, Bo Black and Coons grabbed third-place honors with a time of 1:36.50.
In consistent fashion, Luke Ira championed the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.49 and Hanus grabbed team points for a 17.26 sixth-place finish. Simon Düster’s eighth-place finish in the 1,600-meter run (5:04.98) grabbed Solon a team point while Kendrick Harris’ fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (24.15) netted team points as well.
The Spartans’ 1,600-meter distance medley relay team of Hanus, Nelson, Austin Kennedy and Schaeckenbach grabbed first place with a 3:50.42 time. Dall won the 800-meter dash by four seconds with a time of 2:03.02 and Smith finished eighth in 2:13.71, good for a team point. In the 4x100-meter relay, the Spartans’ team of Black, Ira, McIlravy and Hess ran to a third-place finish in 45.74 and, although unable to score team points, the team of Spencer Wegman, Matt Folkerts, Storm Scott and Harris snatched fifth place with a 46.33. The Solon 4x400-meter team of Trevor McGill, Grant Goldsberry, Nelson, and Krutzfeldt ran a 3:40.63 good for third.
