Solon ends Clippers’ season, win 8-1 in substate final July 23

SOLON– Even with a loss, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers ended the 2014 baseball season on a winning note, posting a 20-18 record (improved over last year’s 13-25 showing) despite falling to the Solon Spartans 8-1 in Class 3A substate final Wednesday, July 23, in Solon.
The Spartans had four runs on the scoreboard (two in the bottom of the first with one each in the second and third) before the Clippers could get a runner across the plate.
In the fourth, Jake Neubauer singled and advanced on a sacrifice by Jacob Klingeman. Neubauer advanced to third on a passed ball and scampered home as Tanner Bandy grounded out.
The Clippers only mustered four hits from Cody Ogden, Neubauer, Stephen Jensen and Cody Wagner to 10 from the Spartans’ bats.
Travis Bowman took the loss after four innings on the mound. Bowman surrendered five hits and four runs (one earned), walked one and struck out one. Kobey Schlotman had two innings of work giving up two hits and one un-earned run while walking two. Neubauer spent one inning on the mound, giving up three hits and three runs (one earned). Neubauer had one strike out.
The game was the final performance for seniors Klingeman and Wagner.
