Solon Optimist Club to sponsor essay contest for students

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon is encouraging area students to write a 700 to 800 word essay about the topic “Lead by Example: Reality or Fiction,” as part of the Optimist Iowa District Contest for the 2015-2016 year.
The Optimist Club of Solon will judge the local students’ essays based on content and presentation to determine the top winners. Winners will receive awards and the winning essays will be sent to the Zone level, and possibly the District level.
The contest is open to students under the age of 18 as of Oct. 1, 2015.
The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which we live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective. In addition to developing skills for written expression, participants also have the opportunity to win a $2,500 college scholarship. The deadline to hand in essays is Dec. 18. Students wishing to participate in the essay contest can find out more about the contest by contacting Dennis Gruber at 319-624-2538 .
