Solon Public Library

Friends mini-tree contest

Congratulations to Julie Drum who won the popular vote prize for her Dr. Seuss tree. There are still a few days left to bid on the mini-trees at the library. Bidding ends at noon on Dec. 14. A few trees have already been purchased using the “Buy It Now” option, and that option is still available.

Adult reading prize winner

The monthly prize for the adult reading program is provided by Friends of the Library. One entry is allowed for every book read by adults, 18 years and older. Be sure to enter your name in the drawing at the circulation desk. The winner for November is Paula Werner.

Register for Christmas drawing

Each time you visit the Solon library through Dec. 20, register for the drawing sponsored by Friends of the Solon Library. Last year’s drawing for the 52-inch plush puppy was so popular, the Friends of the Library decided to do it again. This year’s prize is a 53-inch plush panda bear. What a great surprise for your child or grandchild– or yourself. Drawing for the prizes will be held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 21 and the winner will be notified by phone.

Holiday hours
The library will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25 for the Christmas holiday. For the New Year holiday, the library will be open on Dec. 31 from noon until 5 p.m. only and closed on Jan. 1.

Something for everyone at library

The Lakeview Science Fair is scheduled for the first week in February. If you need some ideas, stop in and browse through our display. We’ll help you get started. Seasonal puzzles and CDs are back out on the shelves– stock up for your upcoming family events. With busy holiday schedules, taking time for a quick relaxing read is essential. Grab a couple titles from our full display of cozy holiday books– perfect for a 10 minute reading wind-down after each long day. Or if you’re a fan of Janet Evanovich, we have multiple copies of the latest release, “Take Down Twenty.” James Patterson fans will also want to check out his latest, “Cross My Heart.”

Friends holiday sale continues

The Friends of the Solon Library will have tables of gift-quality books, holiday decor, and other giftable items at the library in December. Items will continue to be on sale during the library’s regular hours through Dec. 21 while they last. Those of you who ordered Xmas jar mixes can pick them up at the circulation desk. There are a few jar mixes available for sale on the holiday sale table as well.

Holiday display window

The holiday display window designed by local artist Toni Russo is a tribute to the old classic “Peter and the Wolf.” This musical story, which many patrons may remember from their elementary school days, was composed by Russian Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. The story features musical accompaniment of several instruments and teaches children the sounds of a variety of instruments. The window features a very special 100-year-old wolf, on loan from the University of Iowa Natural History Museum and a pair of snow shoes that have actually traversed 200 miles on Mt. McKinley, Alaska (now known as Denali). The snowshoes are on loan from Gary Weinman and were used in 1973 on only the third time Mt. McKinley had been crossed with snowshoes, until that time. The snowy scene also has examples of Russian folk art from the past. This will be a great window for young and old to enjoy. The window will run through Jan. 18.
