Solon Public Library

March Storytime

Storytime is a program every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for children ages two through five, featuring stories, songs and rhymes followed by a craft. Younger siblings are also welcome to attend. Until a new youth services librarian has been hired, we will have a special guest Storytime leader, Debb Green.

Upcoming early-out day

On school early-out days, the library offers free programming for school-aged children. On Thursday, April 4, we will be showing an animated film (rated PG) about the Easter bunny’s teenage son, who heads to Hollywood, determined to become a drummer in a rock ‘n’ roll band. The program will last from 1 until 2:45 p.m.

Think about produce

Did you miss last week’s library program on Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? We have a new display with contact information for our area CSAs. If you are a frustrated gardener or non-gardener but still concerned about adding more veggies to your family’s dinner table, CSAs are a great resource for local produce through the Iowa growing season.

Upcoming window display for National Poetry Month

Local artist Toni Russo is working on her next display window featuring the poet Emily Dickinson and the garden that provided a great deal of this reclusive poet’s inspiration. We are inviting elementary school classes to visit in April, to view the window and they will be encouraged to write their own “Ode to Emily.” We also invite any community residents to contribute a poetic tribute or ode to Emily and we will display along with Toni’s window. Drop in any time and watch a work of art in progress.

Think spring– think garage sale

With spring and spring cleaning are just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the annual Solon area garage sale. Registration information is now available at the library. This annual event always falls on the first Saturday in June, but since almost half of last year’s registered sales were also open on Friday, we are now calling it the Solon Area Garage Sale Days, and it will be May 31 and June 1 this year. Participants can register for only Friday, only Saturday, or both days. If you don’t have enough items for a sale of your own, you may donate your items to the library for our sale. Please remember, though, that the library will not accept clothing, encyclopedias, LPs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, old VCRs, old TV sets, or old computers. Please appropriately recycle those items. We will accept items for the garage sale anytime– no need to wait until May.

Solon High School and Community Reading Together discussion April 4

This year’s selection for the Thinking Critically About Issues in Science: Solon HS and the Community Reading Together program is “The Panic Virus” by Seth Mnookin. The Solon High School Media Center will host the community book discussion led by Anatomy and Physiology students on Thursday, April 4, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

All Iowa Reads

Now in its 11th year, the All Iowa Reads program fosters a sense of unity through reading. Iowans statewide are encouraged to come together in their communities to read and talk about a single book title in the same year. Libraries, book clubs, schools and other local organizations sponsor discussions of the title. The 2013 selection is Jean Thompson’s 2011 novel, “The Year We Left Home.” It is an emotionally powerful story of a family from Iowa during the tumultuous final decades of the 20th century. The book is available at the library or in audio book or e-Book formats downloadable from the NEIBORS tab on the library’s website. It will also be the featured book for the Solon Book Club’s May 21 discussion at the library where new members or visitors are always welcome.

Final Fridays Café is back

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is sponsoring Final Fridays Cafe from 3:45 until 5 p.m. in the meeting room on the last Friday of every month during the school year. There will be lemonade, hot cocoa and assorted baked goodies for sale. Prices are $0.25 and $0.50 cents. Come and eat some yummy food and support the teens on March 29.
