Solon Public Library

New youth services librarian selected

Our new youth services librarian will be starting on April 15, and will be having her first Storytime on the next day, Tuesday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m. Carey Major is originally from South Bend, Ind. and earned a bachelor’s degree in history. She worked for Barnes and Noble there for 11 years in a variety of positions including merchandising manager. While working there Carey realized that she wanted to continue working in the book world but help people on a larger scale and she started a master’s in library science degree at Indiana University. Carey has also been the teen services librarian at St. Joseph County Public Library in South Bend, Ind. Most recently Carey has been living in Cedar Rapids. She will be finishing up her master’s degree this summer. Library director Kris Brown said that the hiring committee was looking for someone with experience with a wide age-range of children, programming for large groups, marketing, technology and experience working in a library setting and Carey fit the bill in all areas. Carey says that she was drawn to working in a close-knit community. She is looking forward to getting to know the children and families.

Save the date for summer reading kick-off

With Spring barely arrived, it might seem like Summer is a long way off, but it’ll be here before we know it. Mark your calendar now for the “Summer Reading Kick-Off Party” on Thursday, May 30, from 5 until 6:30 p.m. It’ll be fun-filled evening to pick up reading logs, hear about the great prizes available, and all the great programs related to this year’s theme of “Dig Deep.” If your family is new to the area and your kids don’t have library cards yet, stop in anytime to get signed up for one before the summer reading rush.

Early-out craft program

On school early-out days, the library offers free programming for school-aged children. On Thursday, April 18, we will be making a clay project. Program starts at 1 p.m. and pick up time is 2 p.m.

Garage sale registration info available

Registration information is now available at the library for the annual Solon city-wide garage sale. This event always falls on the first Saturday in June, but we are expanding it this year to also include the Friday before that day, so it will be May 31 and June 1 this year. Participants can register for just Friday, just Saturday, or both days. If you don’t have enough items for a sale of your own, think about donating your items to the library for our sale. The library cannot accept clothing, encyclopedias, LPs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, old VCRS, old TV sets, or old computers. Please appropriately recycle those items. We will accept items for the garage sale anytime– no need to wait.
