solon Public Library

Fourth of July

The Solon Library will be closed for the Fourth of July holiday. The library will reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 5.

Beef Days

The library will close early on Friday, July 18, and be closed all day Saturday, July 19, for Solon Beef Days.

Board of Friends of the Library is looking for new members
There are open positions this fall as two long-term board members are retiring. Friends of the Solon Library is a non-profit group that helps to support the library’s mission by raising funds for the library’s use for items above their city and county supplied budget. They hold used book sales and other events such as a Halloween costume sale and sponsoring the city-wide garage sale event to raise these funds. The board is composed of seven people and it is not a huge time commitment. The board meets generally once a month for one hour, plus an additional membership meeting in October. Board members are expected to work one or two hours per event (book sale, etc) also. It’s a great way to help support your library and your community. If you are interested and would like to learn more, please email questions to FriendsSolonLibrary@gmail.com or just come to the next meeting, Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the library.

Meeting rooms

It is that time of year to be thinking of meeting room schedules at the Solon Public Library. All groups who have utilized this space on an ongoing basis are reminded that the library requires an updated meeting room application and deposit check to be filed each year.
Reservations can be made starting July 1 for the following year (July 2014 through July 2015). We do not have any reservations on our calendar past July 31. It would be a good idea to call us at 319-624-2678 to confirm any reservations made for this July if you are unsure.
Reservations are handled on a first come, first serve basis. Please get your application in to us as soon as you know what your group’s scheduling needs will be for the upcoming year. Our goal is to be able to accommodate as many groups as possible.

Storytime

Storytime is held every Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. This program is filled with stories, songs, activities and rhymes. Every week, following the stories portion, there is a craft. Older and younger siblings are always welcome to attend. We’ll explore the interactions of pressure, temperature, and states of matter to explain why things pop, bang or blow up. This program will be at 6:30 p.m.

News from the display window

The library’s current Harry Potter/science display will end on July 18. Our next window is “Whistlestop– lovesong to the railroad,” which begins in early August and is dedicated to Joe Turkal.
We are celebrating the history and literature of the railroad, which was once the greatest and most romantic industry in America. If you have ideas for our window, items to loan, stories or memories to share, please call the library at 319-624-2678, or Toni at 319-644-2777.
