Library card sign-up

Sept. is library card sign-up month it is the perfect time to sign-up for or card or celebrate all of the great ways to use the smartest card in your wallet. Here is a list of a few ways you can use you library card.
• Download an e-book. Not sure how? Ask a librarian for help.
• Use a computer for a school project.
• Attend a library game night.
• Join LEGO® Club.
• Take advantage of free family movie nights, or simply check out a DVD to take home.
• Attend a family craft workshop, like Gingerbread House Night.
• Go to a preschool story hour with your child and instill a love of reading.
• Ask for a recommended reading list for your kids.
• Save money and spend quality time with family by heading to the library for an afternoon outing.
• Launch your future by checking out materials on resume writing and interview tips.
• Use the computers to access Iowa Works to search for and apply for jobs.
Get ready for SAT, ACT, and other college or job related exams with Learning Express.
• Learn the history of your town or state.
• Borrow or download a audio book for you next road trip or daily commute.
• Search out tips for building your retirement nest egg.
• Book the meeting room for your club or community organization.

Scrabble club

The Scrabble club meets every last Wednesday of the month. This month the program will be on Sept. 24 in the library meeting room. Bring your own snacks and Scrabble board. (We have three Scrabble games to start with so don’t worry if you don’t have your own). The kid’s group will meet after school from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. The adults will meet 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Meal and a Movie

Meal and a Movie takes place at the library from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., usually on the last Friday of the month. The movie is free, but registration is required for the catered meal and costs $7.50 for an entrée, vegetable, and dessert. The movie follows the meal and usually begins around noon. Call Sandra Hanson at 319-624-2710 to register, or sign up at Old Gold Dining.
This month the movie will be “Last Vegas.” Billy, Paddy, Archie and Sam have been best friends since childhood. So when Billy, the group’s sworn bachelor, finally proposes to his 30-something girlfriend, the four head to Las Vegas with a plan to stop acting their age and relive their glory days. However, upon arriving, the four quickly realize that the decades have transformed Sin City and tested their friendship in ways they never imagined.

Monthly drawing winner

Every month the Friends of the Library sponsor a drawing for a $10 prize. All you have to do to participate in this drawing is to read a book checked out from the Solon library (or listen to one) then enter your name to win the prize. The name is picked at the end of each month. June’s winner was Judy Gleason.

Halloween sale/donations
Scared of all the Halloween costumes piling up in you closets? Fear not. Donate them to the Friends of the Library for the Halloween costume and decoration sale.
Donate your gently used costume anytime between now and Sept. 26.
Come and shop the sale for this year’s costume Saturday, Oct. 4, between 9 and 11 a.m. Most items are under $10.
