Solon rebounds to crush Mustangs

11-1 win

SOLON– Against Western Dubuque, the Spartans couldn’t find the back of the net no matter how hard they tried.
Three days later, it was a different story.
Solon’s varsity boys soccer team rebounded from a 2-0 April 24 loss to the Bobcats by pounding Mount Vernon’s Mustangs, 11-1, in a shortened match at home Friday, April 27.
Seven Spartans scored against the Mustangs, including a hat trick from sophomore Bennett Meier. Juniors Jorel Justus and Luke Yetley also had a multiple-score game with two goals each, while sophomore Braxton Hobbs, senior Nick Radcliffe, sophomore Rodney Wittich and freshman Gabe Yetley provided additional goals. Radcliffe’s score came on a penalty kick.
The Spartans kept constant pressure on Mount Vernon keeper Zach Kolker, who despite allowing 11 goals, collected 10 saves.
Four Solon players had two assists each– Justus, junior Luke McInnis, Gabe Yetley and Luke Yetley.
Senior goalie Eric Weetman allowed a single score by Mount Vernon’s Garrett Herring, but also had three saves in the 65-minute match.
The win moved the Spartans to 9-3 on the season.
Solon had picked up its third loss hosting Western Dubuque earlier in the week.
Despite 13 corner kicks for the Spartans, sophomore Bobcat keeper Cole Burger pitched a shut out with 11 saves in the 2-0 Solon loss.
Western Dubuque had six corner kicks, but managed to convert opportunities on two unassisted goals. Solon’s Weetman also had two saves.
The Spartans play their next three matches on the road, beginning with a Thursday, May 3, trip to Central DeWitt, followed by a showdown with No. 1-ranked (Class 1A) Iowa City Regina Thursday, May 10. Solon is currently ranked second in 1A by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. The Spartans head to Vinton-Shellsburg Friday, May 11, and return to Spartan Stadium to greet Williamsburg Tuesday, May 15, to end the regular season.
