Solon runner-up at North Linn tournament

TROY MILLS– The Spartan varsity wrestlers continued to fare well in weekend tournaments, taking second place at the North Linn Varsity Lynx Invitational Dec. 19.
Cole Fritz (145 pounds) and Trevor Nelson (160) were crowned tournament champions for Solon.
Nelson pinned quarterfinal opponent Colton Caldwell of North Fayette in 1:40, then earned a technical fall over Cameron Bantz of Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) and a 12-4 major decision over Owen Grover of Beckman in the final. He remained undefeated on the season with a 14-0 record.
Fritz took his semifinal against Mitch Smith of Maquoketa Valley with a technical fall, 19-3, and edged out Jared Kerr of North Fayette in the final with a 6-4 decision.
Williamsburg captured the team title with 202 points, followed by Solon with 187.5. North Fayette was a distant third with 136.5 points, edging out Beckman Catholic (135) and host team North Linn (126).
The Spartans benefitted from second-place finishes by Ben Carr (126 pounds), Graeson Dall (152) and Dillon Diltz (170).
Carr pinned Clear Creek Amana’s Andrew Rohret in the quarterfinals and took a 6-4 decision over Johnny Wander of North Fayette in the semifinal before falling to undefeated Brock Rathburn of CP-U.
Dall pinned North Fayette’s Weston Fantz in 1:49 and took a 5-3 decision over Colton Lewis of Williamsburg before being pinned in the final by Beckman’s Luke Hageman.
It took Diltz only 34 seconds to pin quarterfinal opponent Kaden Loyd of North Fayette, and he took a 3-0 decision against Josh Holub of Williamsburg before pulling out of the 170-pound championship match with an injury.
Christian Haight (113) and Tyler Linderbaum (285) each finished third.
Haight lost his opening match but then wrestled to 16-0 technical falls in his next two matches.
Linderbaum pinned his quarterfinal opponent in 1:12, but lost a 2-1 decision to Mitch Demmer of Dubuque Senior before taking the consolation semifinal by fall, and the third place match with a 3-1 decision over Quinten Miller of Williamsburg.
Aidan Dall (106) and Zack Bevans (132) each won fourth-place points for Solon.
