Spartans fall to Mustangs on the road
MOUNT VERNON– It was one of those games.
The Solon boys fell to the Mount Vernon Mustangs on the road Tuesday night (Feb. 4), 69-55.
“They (Mount Vernon) played well, and it was just kind of a buzz saw,” said Solon head coach Brad Randall. “It just wasn’t one of our best defensive games.”
The Spartans trailed by only five points at halftime, but every time the Spartans made a run, Mount Vernon’s Andy Decamp seemed to be there to match it. “He just shot the ball so well,” Randall said. “Even when we defended him well.” Decamp finished the game with 22 points on 8-12 from the field.
Statistics were not available for Solon, although Randall reported Nick Shelman as the leading scorer with 11 points and Austin Miller with 10.
“They kind of identified Nick as the game went on, but when he had the shots, he knocked them down,” Randall said.
The Spartans were scheduled to face Marion on the road Tuesday, and then will host Davenport Assumption Thursday and Central DeWitt Friday for senior night. The following Tuesday, Feb. 18, the boys head to Anamosa.
