Spartans fall to West Delaware Hawks in second round of 3A football playoffs

MANCHESTER– It was a beautiful night for football, Monday, Nov. 2, as the Solon Spartans traveled to Manchester to meet the undefeated West Delaware Hawks. The Spartans fell behind in the first quarter, 7-0, and the Hawks scored again early in the second quarter. But it appeared Solon was on the brink of a repeat of its Wednesday battle with Washington when they rallied just before half with a score. At the half, West Delaware led, 14-7, but Solon seemed ready to start knocking.
A momentum-killing drive by the Hawks to start the second half of play stymied the Spartans, and the Hawks scored on possessions after two Solon three-and-outs. The Spartans were unable to find the end zone the remainder of the quarter and the Hawks would score again, with Solon blocking the point after to go up, 34-7, at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter, the Spartan defense found some success, holding the Hawks to only a field goal, and Solon’s offense found the end zone for the final time of the night in the twilight of the fourth quarter. In a repeat of last year’s exit from the playoffs, the West Delaware Hawks defeated the Solon Spartans, this time, 37-14.
