Spartans keep clawing back from behind

SOLON– When the Solon boys score more than 50 points, they usually win.
The Spartans continued to search for consistent offense last week, losing at home to Dyersville Beckman and winning on the road at Anamosa.
In both games, Solon found itself scrapping back from an early deficit to take the lead. Against Beckman, they just couldn’t hold it.
“Beckman was a very physical game,” noted Head Coach Brad Randall. “It’s almost a little bit of a shock to your system when you play them.”
The Spartans fell into an early seven-point hole against Beckman in the opening minutes, narrowed it to a single point in the second quarter, and trailed at halftime 20-25.
Despite consecutive turnovers to start the second half and trailing by 10 points, Solon battled back in the third and took the lead, 38-33.
“We definitely had our chances,” Randall said, but turnovers and poor shot selection down the stretch let Beckman take control again for the 51-46 win.
Joe Weeks led the scoring for Solon with 14 points, while Turner Wentzien added 11. Weeks also had seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Solon outrebounded Beckman, 18-16, but Beckman shot slightly better from the field and had five more free throw attempts.

At Anamosa, the Spartans again fell behind, this time spotting the Raiders a 14-2 first quarter lead.
“They were very fired up,” Randall said of the Anamosa team. “It wasn’t a very good first quarter.”
But a 44-point offensive onslaught in the second half spurred Solon back into the game and the lead, winning 64-58 to move to 6-3 overall.
Joe Weeks torched Anamosa for 22 points, shooting 8-13 from the field and 6-8 from the free throw line to lead Solon. Rory Siddell added 16 points, while Turner Wentzien and Nick Shelman each had nine. Shelman went 5-6 from the line down the stretch, while Wentzien had nine assists.
Weeks added 12 rebounds on a night when Solon pulled down 34 total off the glass. “That’s the most we’ve had in a while,” Randall observed.
“We took shots we’re capable of making,” Randall said, noting the team had fewer turnovers and passed the ball much better. “We’re pretty close to being a pretty good basketball team.”
Solon’s schedule resumes on the road to Maquoketa Jan. 10. The Spartans return home to host West Delaware Friday, Jan. 13, then hit the road for a rematch with Central DeWitt Tuesday, Jan. 17.
