State hopes dashed in the dust

Nick Kasenberg was DOA at home plate Monday night in Williamsburg as the Clippers faced the Raiders in a substate district final. Williamsburg won the game, which took two nights to play due to a weather delay, and advanced to face Benton Community.

WILLIAMSBURG– The 2013 baseball season came to a sudden end last week for both the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers and Iowa City West High Trojans in substate action.
The Clippers fell 11-3 Tuesday (July 23) on the road in Williamsburg against the rival Raiders. The class 3A Substate 5, District 10 game was a continuation of Monday’s suspended game, which was halted at the end of four innings due to lightning. The contest was tied 3-3 at the time.
Bryan Kalkhoff scored in the bottom of the second inning on an error, tying the game 1-1. Tanner Bandy scored in the third on an RBI single with an extra base by Stephen Jensen while Nick Kasenberg scored in the fourth on an RBI single from Jacob Klingeman.
The win sent the Raiders to Benton Community Wednesday to face the Bobcats in the substate final, with Williamsburg prevailing 5-4 and advancing to the state tournament as the No.8 seed to face No.1 Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic on Tuesday, July 30.
The game was also the final appearance for seniors AJ Liddell, Kasenberg and Nate Courtois. Four Clippers were named to the WaMaC West All-Conference teams: Bandy and Liddell made the first team while Cody Wagner and Jensen were named to the honorable mention squad.
West upset
In Iowa City the No. 2 in class 4A West High crew faced the unranked Lions of Linn-Mar in a substate final Wednesday night, falling in a stunning upset, 4-3.
The Trojans put the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as Devin Raffensperger scored on an RBI double by Tyus Adkins. The Lions scored in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1-1 and then put up three runs in the sixth.
West had a shot at stealing the game in the top of the seventh after Reid Bonner singled and Raffensperger and Adkins walked to load the bases. Bonner scored as Austin Stroschein, pitching for Linn-Mar, walked Josh Verry with two outs and the bases still loaded. Justin Wyant, who let loose a wild pitch that allowed Raffensperger to score West’s final run, replaced Stroschein late in the inning.
The loss ended the Trojan season at 33-8 and was the final performance for seniors Verry, Sam Scott, Ezra Reiners, Sam Searls, Bonner, Colin Baker, Greg Ludwig, Tanner Wilson, Andrew Raymer, Declan Doyle and Matt Beneke. The Lions, with a 27-15 record and the No. 5 seed, were scheduled to meet No. 4 seed Johnston (26-12) July 31, in the state tournament quarterfinal round.
