Senior upends West, 68-59

Iowa City West High’s varsity boys basketball program set a new state record recently with 81 consecutive home wins. The Rams of Dubuque Senior ended that streak in an afternoon matinee Saturday, Feb. 3, by handing the Trojans their third loss of the season.
Senior won the contest 68-59 after overcoming a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter and inching ahead to a 30-26 halftime lead. The Rams stayed just out of reach of the Trojans in the third period despite being outscored 17-15. Senior led 45-43 going into the final eight minutes where a 23-point effort sealed their fifth consecutive win and improved them to a 13-4 record. West dipped to 13-3 with the loss, which is only its second loss to a Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) team. One loss was to Bishop Miege of Kansas.
Patrick McCaffery led West High with 18 points with 10 from Seybian Sims. Dante Eldridge and Evan Flitz produced nine points each with seven from Jake Anderson, three from Jayson Barnes, two from Hakeem Odunsi and one point from Jalen Gaudet. Sims led the Trojans with 10 rebounds while McCaffery pulled down seven.
