IOWA CITY– A shockwave rippled through Iowa City as the City High Little Hawks snapped a 15-game losing streak to their crosstown rivals, the West High Trojans, in the second half of a varsity double-header Friday, Feb. 12.
City High took down the Trojans, 63-53, in the teams’ second meeting of the season. West took the first contest in January, 45-31, at West High.
The Trojans found themselves in trouble early as the Little Hawks scored within mere seconds of the opening tip-off and raced to a hefty lead. West rallied back late in the first period, but still trailed 14-10. A five-point second period for West led to a 23-15 deficit at the half. The Trojans put up 15 points in the third in an effort to close the gap, but the City crew capitalized on West’s miscues, including a technical foul on the Trojan bench. The loss put West at 15-4 overall and snapped an eight-game winning streak.
Wali Parks and Tanner Lohaus led the Trojans with 12 points each, while Devontae Lane added 11.
Bergie’s Boys close out the regular season at home on Thursday, Feb. 18, as Dubuque Hempstead visits. The Trojans earned a Class 4A Substate 6 Quarterfinal Round bye and will start the road to Des Moines at home on Thursday, Feb. 26, against either Cedar Rapids Jefferson or Cedar Rapids Washington. The Subustate Final is set for Tuesday, March 1, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
The Women of Troy opened the evening of basketball with their own rematch from January in which the Little Hawks won at West in double-overtime. Unfortunately for B.J. Mayer and company, the No. 3-ranked Little Hawks flew past No. 12 West High, 57-41.
City High put up 17 points in the first period while holding West to only two buckets, from Maddie Huinker and Logan Cook, for a 17-4 deficit. The Women of Troy rebounded in the second quarter and battled to a 22-21 deficit with two minutes remaining in the half. However, City stretched the lead to 25-22 at the half and was up 40-32 heading into the final eight minutes.
Logan Cook led West with 13 points and was the only Woman of Troy in double-digits as Rachel Saunders added nine while Huinker and Cailyn Morgan had eight points each. The loss closed out the regular season on a 14-7 note overall heading into the post season. The road to Des Moines for West starts at home on Saturday, Feb. 20, as Cedar Rapids Jefferson visits for a Class 5A Region 8 Semifinal Round game.
