CEDAR RAPIDS– Defending Class 4A champion Iowa City West High defeated the defending 3A champion Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier 54-49 Thursday, Feb. 15, at Xavier.
The Saints proved to be quite a challenge for the Trojans, taking the first period 12-9 and leading West 28-24 at halftime. Xavier led 40-35 going into the final eight minutes, but the Trojans’ trademark defense kicked in to hold the Saints to a pair of field goals and a smattering of free throws.
Xavier’s Matt Mims led all scorers with 25 points while Patrick McCaffery led the Trojans with 19. Seybian Sims and Hakeem Odunsi had nine points apiece, with eight from Dante Eldridge, seven from Evan Flitz and two from Dadrian Hoambrecker. Odunsi dominated the boards for West with 10 rebounds while McCaffery pulled down eight.
The Saints finished the regular season at 15-6 while the Trojans improved to 17-3 ahead of a Saturday, Feb. 17, non-conference season finale at home against Cretin-Derham Hall Catholic High School from St. Paul, Minn.
The Trojans earned a first-round bye in Class 4A substate competition and will play at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at home against the winner of a Monday, Feb. 19, Cedar Rapids Washington and Iowa City, City High contest. The substate final is set for Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 8 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids.
