Trojans knock out Valley, Cedar Rapids Wash at state tourney
DES MOINES– The West High Trojans were well on their way to a third straight state soccer championship when heavy rains at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines on Saturday, June 7, postponed the finals match between West and Johnston to Tuesday, June 10 (during production of this edition).
The Trojans, under coach Brad Stiles, have earned four of the last five state championships. A win against Johnston would mean the first three-peat for boys soccer.
On Thursday, June 5, the Trojans disposed of Valley, West Des Moines 2-0 in a Class 3A quarterfinal round match. Alex Bode drilled the Tigers’ goal about midway through the first half to give West a 1-0 lead. Ted Paulsen nailed the second goal with 18:14 remaining in the second half. The win improved the Trojans’ record to 19-1, retired Valley at 15-5 and advanced West to a Friday, June 6, engagement with the Warriors of Cedar Rapids Washington in the semifinals. The Trojans prevailed with a header from Wadood Daoud in the second overtime period for a 1-0 win.
