Trojans make high school soccer history

DES MOINES– The Iowa City West High Trojans made history Tuesday, June 10, when they became the first team to win three Class 3A state soccer championships in a row.
West High defeated Johnston 1-0 at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines in the final round after having knocked off Valley, West Des Moines 2-0 in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, June 5, and taking down the Warriors of Cedar Rapids Washington in the semifinals on Friday, June 6, 1-0 in the second overtime period.
Jack Olson, a senior, scored his second goal of the season midway through the second period for a 1-0 lead the Trojans were able to maintain. The loss by Johnston was the first this season for the Dragons, who ended with a 20-1 record while the Trojans improved to 20-1. West High’s only loss of the season came at the hands of rival City High in a last-second goal last month.
The tournament marked the final performances by seniors Ivan Perez, Jason Guymon, Ryan O’Deen, Olson, Alex Bode, Ben Troester, Yannik Encarnacao, Garrett Grimsman, Jacob Mentz, Wadood Daoud, Anthony Pottratz, Zach Serovy, Samuel Hansen and Ryan Collins.
