IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans opened the 2015-2016 season with a visit from the WaMaC conference’s Class 3A Mount Vernon Mustangs. One could presume a meeting of a Class 4A powerhouse would have little trouble with a smaller program, but the Mustangs showed they could run with the big school as they largely kept pace with a West High squad that wasn’t quite hitting on all cylinders.
The Trojans led 13-9 after the first period and 33-19 at the half, but the Mustangs narrowed the gap to a seven-point deficit going into the final period.
Connor McCaffery led all scorers with 21 points, including a pair of three-pointers, and was backed up by Wali Parks’ 11 points and Tanner Lohaus’ 10 points. Parks thrilled the West High crowd with a rim-hanging slam dunk in the first half.
Along with veteran Trojans McCaffery, Parks, Lohaus, Alex Henderson and Devontae Lane, some new faces made their varsity debut, including McCaffery’s freshman brother Patrick and junior Nate Disterhoft.
Mount Vernon’s Tommy Hook, a senior, led the Mustangs with 13 points.
The Trojans travel to Waterloo West on Friday, Dec. 11, and return to Waterloo on Tuesday, Dec. 15, to take on East High before meeting Cedar Rapids Washington on the home court Friday, Dec. 18.
