Bettendorf awaits IC West in Class 4A semifinal

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– They’re going back to “The DOME.”
Iowa City West High’s varsity football Trojans knocked off Cedar Falls for the second time this season Friday, Nov. 3, at home in a Class 4A state football quarterfinal, and punched their ticket to a Friday, Nov. 10, semifinal with Bettendorf.
The Trojans won, 27-9, thanks in part to a big second half.
The teams met in the third week of the season, in the UNI-Dome, where the Tigers took West High to overtime. West prevailed, 32-31, after falling behind early and having to rally back.
In the postseason rematch, West High stopped the Tigers’ first drive, which resulted in a failed field goal attempt, and took a 7-0 lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter as Austin West scored on an 18-yard pass reception from Evan Flitz. Lucas Karwall nailed the extra-point attempt.
Karwall added three points with 9:58 left in the second quarter by booting a West High field goal through the uprights for a 10-0 lead.
The Tigers made their way onto the scoreboard with 4:11 left in the half as they settled for a field goal making it 10-3 at the halftime break.
Karwall nailed his second field goal of the night with 7:02 left in the third quarter to give West a 13-3 lead, but the Tigers scored on a one-yard run with 10 seconds left in the quarter to cut the lead to 13-9. The Trojans blocked the Tigers’ extra point kick.
Quarterback Evan Flitz scored for West in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard keeper while Cole Mabry scored with 2:55 left in the game. Karwal’s extra point kicks were good on both attempts and the Trojans prevailed.
Flitz completed 12 of 18 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown, and kept the ball eight times for 44 yards. Jalen Gaudet took six passes 79 yards; Traevis Buchanan went 35 yards on three receptions and West went 34 yards on two passes with one touchdown. Trumell Roberts made 17 carries for 130 yards to lead the Trojan ground assault.
While his Trojans celebrated their win, Coach Garrett Hartwig was very matter-of-fact about the game and what lies ahead.
“We knew it would be a four-quarter game. It has to be. This time of year, there are no easy teams left. Everybody’s solid, everybody’s here for a reason,” he said.
Hartwig gave credit to his defensive players and coaching staff. “We have a great offense that deserves a lot of attention, rightfully so, but our defense has been improving by the week, and Defensive Coordinator Tyler Meade does a great job of getting our guys in the right position,” he said. “You run, you tackle and you hit. That’s what you have to do this time of year, and we’ve got guys who are doing that.”
Flitz also garnered praise from Hartwig.
“He’s a great person, first,” the coach said. “That’s reflected in his play in the game, and I can’t put into words what he means to me right now because I still get another week with him. So, I’m looking forward to that.”
Having one more week of football is significant to Hartwig. “We get to practice on Monday, and not a lot of teams in the state can say that anymore.” The purpose, of course, is preparation for a second consecutive state semifinal appearance, this time against the Bulldogs of Bettendorf.
“We’re not going up there for the tour,” Hartwig said, “The team we’re going to play is very good, they’re going to deserve to be there, too, and we’re going to have to play our best football if we want to win there. We’ll enjoy it (the win) tonight and we get to workout tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 4) morning, a shake-out lift, and we’ll roll into next week.”
The Trojans head for the UNI-Dome at 11-0 while the Bulldogs are 10-1 after knocking off North Scott. West and Bettendorf will tangle at 4:06 p.m. Ankeny Centennial (9-2) and reigning Champion Dowling Catholic (10-1) follow at 7:06 p.m. Dowling defeated the Trojans in last year’s championship game.
The winners advance to the Class 4A championship at 7:06 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17.
