KALONA Three laps through the school grounds and nearby woods at Hillcrest Academy yielded third-place finishes for Solons boys and girls cross country teams, Monday, Oct. 5.
In another showdown with Class 3A second-ranked Pella, Solons boys also had to deal with Class 1As top squad, Danville-New London (D-NL); knowing that the regular season is sliding to a close. The two may meet again before state. Pella and Monticello are hosting two of the five statewide 3A regional qualifiers later this month. Solon should travel to one or the other.

For the girls, Senior Kiersten Conway was first across again for the fifth-ranked (3A) Lady Spartans, hitting the finish stripe in 20:36. Six spots back, sophomore Mary Fiala grabbed 12th in 21:19. In a meet at which four freshmen were in the seven-girl varsity pack, ninth graders Anna Quillin (21:33) and Ashlynn Williams (21:49) were 16-17 in the 66-runner field.
Mid Prairie, (No. 2 in 3A) with a one-two-three finish, won the Hillcrest meet (27 points). Iowa City High (58 points) outdistanced Solons 72.
