Two in a row

Lady Spartans take control against Central DeWitt, 50-34
Rylee Smith and Ali Herdliska go after the loose ball created when Smith stripped Central DeWitt’s Amanda Brainerd in the low post during Solon’s 50-34 win Tuesday. The Lady Spartans had nine steals against the Sabers.

SOLON– Make it two in a row for the Solon girls.
The Lady Spartans avenged their season-opening loss by defeating Central DeWitt, 50-34, Tuesday for their second win in a row.
The Lady Spartans have won three of their last four games and moved to 3-4 on the season.
After falling behind in the first quarter, Solon stepped on the gas in the second quarter, taking the lead when Nichole Oberthien went coast to coast for a layup and an 18-17 lead.
The Lady Spartans then went on a 9-0 run, taking a 27-17 lead into the locker room for halftime.
Solon continued to outplay DeWitt in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring DeWitt 23-17 in the second half.
Solon head coach Tony Nicol said the game plan was simple– “Try to slow down Amanda Brainerd and Miranda Meland, who torched us for 42 points combined the first time we played.”
Rylee Smith and Sydney Lawson held Meland to four points, he said, while Brainerd ended up with 19 points. “But Shelby Gunnells, Candice Kucera and Emily Capper battled her all night and did a great job. Anytime you can hold a team to 34 points you have to be really happy with the defensive effort,” he said.
Capper had two blocks, and the Lady Spartans out-rebounded DeWitt by a 36-17 margin, led by Smith with eight, Ali Herdliska with seven and Gunnells with six.
Herdliska had 12 points to lead Solon offensively, but the Lady Spartans had balanced scoring. Gunnells had nine points, Josie Durr had eight, Smith had seven and Lawson had six.
Although Solon was a measly 2-11 from 3-point range, the Lady Spartans made 14-18 free throws, including Herdliska going 5-7 and Smith 5-6.
Solon played nine deep, and each Lady Spartan not only scored but each had at least one rebound.
“Our young players off the bench just keep getting better and better,” Nicol noted. “This was the perfect example of a team win.” Nicol complimented the junior varsity girls for a great job of running scout sets against the varsity.
“It is not often that you get an opportunity to turn around and play a team twice in such a short period of time,” Nicol said. “To handle a team that two weeks ago beat us by 20 is a good testament to how this team just continues to improve.”
The cancellation of school Friday postponed the Lady Spartans scheduled game against Dyersville Beckman. The girls return to action after classes resume in January. Solon hosts Maquoketa Friday, Jan. 3, and Clear Creek Amana comes to town Tuesday, Jan. 7.
