Unstable ice on reservoir

CORALVILLE– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that while the extreme cold has added ice to Coralville Lake, it has also caused the inflow of water into the lake to be less than the minimum outflow.
Reduced inflows into the reservoir cause the water level below the ice to slowly drop creating an air pocket between the ice and surface of the water. The lake level is approximately one foot lower than when the ice started forming in December. This results in very unstable ice. Ice unsupported by lake water is at risk of cracking, breaking or giving away at any time.In addition, as the ice shelf begins to drop, it can cause a dangerous slope along the shoreline, making it hard to get off the ice. Due to these conditions, it is extremely unsafe to venture onto the ice.
