Supervisors appoint three to Planning & Zoning Commission

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) is back up to full strength with the appointment of three new members to fill vacancies on the five-member commission.
The Board of Supervisors appointed Dan Fuhrmeister (3303 Lynden Heights Rd. NE, Iowa City), Erin Hazen (2181 St. Bridget’s, Solon), and David Roggy (2892 Meadowlark Lane NE, Iowa City) to fill the empty seats during their formal meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15.
Seven applications were received for the five-year terms, which began upon appointment. One vacancy was for an unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2021, one was for an unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2022, and one was for an unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2024.
According to the State Code of Iowa, all members of the P&Z Commission must live within Johnson County and reside outside the corporate limits of any city.
The trio was approved on a 5-0 roll call vote.
The Supervisors also filled vacancies on the Building Code Board of Appeals, Compensation Commission, Livable Community for Successful Aging, SEATS Paratransit Advisory Committee, and the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Tristan Gingerich (3224 Bayertown Rd. SW, Riverside) was appointed to a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2023 on the Building Code Board of Appeals, and represents the plumbing industry. No applications were received for the two current vacancies, for owners of farm property. The Compensation Commission has a total of 28 members and the open seats are for one-year terms, beginning upon appointment, and expiring Dec. 31 of this year. The county advertised for the vacancies since Aug. 23, 2019. In addition, all 28 seats will be considered “vacant” on Jan. 1, 2021 pending re-appointment or new appointments by the Board of Supervisors.
Scott Hawes (2401 Scott Blvd., Iowa City), Kathryn Jett (457 N. Front St., North Liberty), James Phelps (226 River St., Iowa City), and Paula Vaughan (1712 Winston Dr., Iowa City) were appointed to the Livable Community for Successful Aging Commission. One term expires June 30, 2021, one expires June 30, 2022, and two expire on June 30, 2023. There were no applications received for two vacancies on the SEATS Paratransit Advisory Committee. The vacancies are for unexpired two-year terms beginning upon appointment, and expiring June 30, 2022. Applicants must be consumers of Johnson County SEATS Service.
Kathleen Sluka (4771 Dingleberry Rd. NE, Iowa City) was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Zoning Board of Adjustment for an unexpired five-year term, which ends Dec. 31. Iowa Code requires all five members to live in Johnson County but reside outside the corporate limits of any city.
