Van Allen wins whiteboard from HyVee, Proctor & Gamble

NORTH LIBERTY– Van Allen Elementary School in North Liberty was one of four local schools to win a Proctor & Gamble production promotion contest co-sponsored by Hy-Vee food stores. The school was awarded an interactive, computer-networked SMART Board, a large whiteboard that uses touch screen technology to allow manipulation of objects projected onto the whiteboard. The Coralville Hy-Vee store also donated an Epson projector and stand to Van Allen to facilitate use of the whiteboard. A SMART Board typically retails for $1,400.
Van Allen families participated in the contest by purchasing Proctor & Gamble products and going online to enter a code corresponding to their purchases. Schools who logged the most purchases were awarded the boards.
“There was a lot of family involvement in this project,” said Van Allen PTO treasurer Lisa Carlson. “We also encouraged families to donate the personal care products they purchased to our Family Resource Center.”
Van Allen PTO President Amy Schemmel Keller said the school currently has nine whiteboards in classrooms already, technology that can be used in teaching art, music, math and science.
“The whiteboards help engage all students in the classroom, no matter their ability or skill levels,” said Schemmel Keller.
“In the business world, people are using them for major presentations,” added Coralville Hy-Vee Store Director Michael Stoermer. “They have many applications, from elementary school to high school, college and beyond. The technology gets kids' attention and keeps them personally involved in the learning.”
Proctor & Gamble partnered with Hy-Vee stores nationwide to conduct the contest. Locally, the SMART Boards were won by Van Allen and Hills elementary schools in the Iowa City Community School District, as well as Regina Catholic schools and Willowwind private school in Iowa City.
