VanderPol's career cut short

IOWA CITY– There has been some sad news from the women’s basketball team, as Nicole VanderPol is calling it a career.
The 6-2 senior has been fighting injuries for most of her time at Iowa and the latest, poor circulation in her leg which gives her numbness, has made her decision to finish the season on the bench supporting her teammates.
I talked to her at the hospital when the women’s basketball team visited the children and she said she was done playing.
The Hawkeyes have been on the short end of rebounding stats most of the year and I have no doubt with Nicole, their board work would have been better.
Nicole came to Iowa from Grundy Center, where she was a four-year starter for basketball, 2005 class 2A Player of the Year, first-team All-State her junior and senior seasons plus she was an All-State volleyball player and a good tennis player.
A knee injury cut short her freshman year at Iowa. Nicole played in 28 games as a sophomore, starting five, and led Iowa in field goal percentage shooting 49%. There was so much depth in the front line her junior year she played in only 18 games.
Nicole never complained or used the excuse of being a diabetic for her challenges. She was always there for an interview and no matter what she does in life she will be successful because she is a winner.
Good luck Nicole…you deserve it!
