Veteran’s trail dedication ceremony

IOWA CITY– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, will be honoring local military veterans on Memorial Day, May 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Coralville Lake. The 45-minute ceremony will be conducted at the East Overlook Picnic Area located on the east side of the dam at Coralville Lake. The public is invited to help recognize and honor these Johnson County Veterans.
Honorees for this year’s dedication are:
• David H. Brenneman for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. Service Dates: May 4, 1944 until Feb. 5, 1946, Purple Heart.
• Lawson B. Coapstick for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and the U.S. Army during Operation Enduring Freedom. Service Dates: May 9, 1973 until June 3, 2010 Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal.
• Gary J. Droll for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Service Dates: Dec. 1, 1959 until May 26, 1993 Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
• William J. Halvorsen for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. Service Dates: May 19, 1943 until Nov. 12, 1945 POW during WW II and Purple Heart.
• Michael W. Hart for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Army during The Vietnam War. Service Dates: April 30, 1969 until Jan. 29, 1971 Purple Heart.
• Thomas L. Meyers for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Army during The Vietnam War. Service Dates: May 28, 1970 until July 31, 1990 Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.
• Thomas R. Reinier for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Navy during The Vietnam War. Service Dates: July 6, 1967 until July 3, 1969 Silver Star Medal.
• P. Larry Sorensen for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Navy during The Vietnam War. Service Dates: March 22, 1968 until Oct. 30, 1971 Bronze Star Medal.
These eight individuals have received many awards that distinguish them above having just served. For example being a POW during WW II, a Silver Star, two Legion of Merits, four Bronze Stars, four Purple Hearts and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross to name just a few.
The Veteran’s Trail is a barrier free trail accessible to everyone. Various features along the trail are named for the one hundred forty nine (149) local veterans who have been honored on the trail since its dedication in 1989.
