IOWA CITY– Maybe if they’d just had a few more minutes to play.
Time was not on the Women of Troy’s side Friday night as both the sophomore and varsity squads came up short despite fourth-quarter rallies. The sophomores trailed most of the game, put up a fierce fight in the fourth, and fell, 39-34. Jessie Harder led the sophs with an 18-point effort.
The varsity opened with a 6-0 lead, fell behind by 2 and re-took the lead with an Ally Disterhoft 3-pointer, the first of four on the night for the senior. The first quarter ended in an 11-11 tie which was broken early in the second by Mollie Mason. The Warriors surged ahead and never looked back, taking a 33-24 lead at halftime.
The break only reenergized the Warriors as they came out and embarked on a 6-point run before Danielle Craig fired-off a 3-pointer. West still trailed 39-27 and was down 49-33 going into the final eight minutes. The Women of Troy saved the best for last, outscoring the Warriors 28-14 in the period with 16 points put up by Disterhoft including a pair of 3-bombs. Mollie Mason, Craig and Laynie Whitehead also poured in points to narrow the gap to 68-53. At the buzzer, Lauren Larson sank a three-pointer for the 63-61 final.
Disterhoft led all with 33 points, Craig had 11 and Mason had 8. Whitehead and Larson had 3 points each with 2 for Mikaela Morgan and 1 for Hannah Fairfield. The loss was the second in a row for West after falling 73-62 at Waterloo West on Tuesday, Dec. 4. During that game, coach B.J. Mayer was ejected in the wake of two technical fouls. The ejection led to a one-game suspension for the Washington game, putting assistant coach Jeff Wieck in charge.
West came into Friday’s game ranked eighth in Class 5A. The loss dropped the Women of Troy to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the MVC. West is on the road Friday, Dec. 14, as they take on the Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier at Xavier High School in a men’s/women’s doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
