Wayne F. Stratton

Wayne F. Stratton, 78, of Tiffin, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Windmill Manor Care Center. Funeral Services were held Thursday, Oct. 22, at Grace United Methodist Church, Tiffin, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, Tiffin. Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the church. Memorial donations can be made in Wayne’s memory to Iowa City Hospice or Iowa Special Olympics.
Wayne was born Nov. 4, 1930, in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Fred and Anna (Wagner) Stratton. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1948. He married Janis Parizek on May 24, 1952, in Elizabethtown, Ky.
His family includes his wife, Jan; children, Steve (June) Stratton of Ely; Mark (Marianne) of Coralville; Kathy (deceased), Susan (Perry) Falvo of Plano, Texas; Gerrie (Tom) Lueck of Cedar Rapids; and Malissa (Steve) Drahos of Mt. Vernon. Grandchildren are Stephanie (Greg) Hardin of Cedar Rapids; Luke Stratton of Cedar Rapids; Jake Stratton of Ely; Katherine Stratton of Coralville; Grant Falvo of Plano, Texas; Audrey Lueck of Cedar Rapids; and Spencer Stratton-Drahos of Mt. Vernon. Great-grandchildren are Jordan Stratton of Ely; John Saldivar of Cedar Rapids; and Caleb Hardin of Anamosa.
Wayne was preceded in death by daughter, Kathy; his parents, Fred and Anna Stratton; sisters, Lois Stratton and Zola Weldon; and brothers Earl and Leo Stratton. He is survived by his brother, Charlie Stratton of Washington; and sister, Eileen McCormack of California.
He served in Germany as a U.S. Army Sergeant from 1952-1953.
After the service, in 1954, Wayne went to work for the University of Iowa steam shop as a pipefitter for 15 years. He then transferred to the University of Iowa Architect’s office as an inspector. In 1974 he became a pipefitter for Local #125 working as a supervisor on many projects around Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus. He spent his last years until retirement working at the ADM facility in Cedar Rapids as a superintendent for Bowker Mechanical Contractors.
As a long-time citizen of Tiffin, Wayne served as councilman from 1958 to 1965. He served as mayor in 1966 and 1967. In addition, he volunteered for many years as a fireman.
Wayne was very active in the Johnson County Democrats for many years and loved to discuss politics. He was also an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, chess, cards, and checkers – at which he was unbeaten.
Wayne was highly respected by all who knew him. Foremost, Wayne was a devoted family man and will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
