DES MOINES- The Trojan baseball team made its first mark at Principal Park this year with an 11-3 win over the Des Moines East Scarlets, in the first round of the state tournament July 29. But the seemingly easy victory wasn’t all smooth sailing.
The Scarlets started the game with an early lead, scoring two points at the top of the first inning and another at the top of the third, giving them a 3-0 lead over West. This lead didn’t last long; by the end of the fourth inning the Trojans had stolen the momentum.
It started with a hit from Conner McCaffery that allowed Kevin DeLaney to run home, and with a failed throw from Des Moines East, DeLaney made it safely.
Oliver Martin took the plate with full bases and no outs. With a blast to center field, resulting in a triple, he cleared the bases putting West in the lead, 4-3. The Trojans didn’t stop there, with two outs, Tanner Lohaus hit a single that allowed Martin to score and West ended the fourth inning up, 5-3.
West held the Scarlets at the top of the fifth inning and immediately continued their batting success with Spencer Wiskus. He slammed a double that brought in two scores.
Martin hit a pop fly and, before Des Moines East could catch it, Wiskus was able to run home. Martin’s sacrifice hit ended the fifth inning and made the score 8-3.
The Scarlets, trying to change up their game, replaced starting pitcher Jeremy Bentley with their back up.
The Trojans quickly adapted.
With runners on first and second, third baseman Izaya Ono-Fullard hit a double to advance a runner and bring two in.
McCaffery hit a sacrifice grounder to get out on first, but scored Ono-Fullard before the play.
The game ended 11-3 with the Trojans advancing to the semifinal round. They defeated Kennedy, 5-2, Friday night at Principal Park. However, West would ultimately fall in the championship game, to South East Polk, 6-2.
