West High’s Craig commits to Cal State Fullerton
IOWA CITY– West High junior Danielle “Dani” Craig has verbally committed to play basketball at Cal State Fullerton after accepting Coach Daron Park’s scholarship offer to join the Titans’ squad in the fall of 2015, according to a press release from Scott Kibby, West High athletic director.
Craig was recruited by a number of schools but ultimately chose Cal State Fullerton. “Cal State Fullerton is a place that I liked because they are an up-and-coming program, and they really believed in me even though I had my injury,” Craig said. “I am also excited to play for a program that has great coaches and outstanding players that will help me reach my potential as a student and an athlete.”
Craig sat-out the 2013-2014 basketball season after suffering a torn ACL in a jamboree a week before the start of the regular season. However, Craig continued to contribute to the Women of Troy as she mentored the younger players and served as a leader. In her sophomore season, she helped guide the team to the state tournament with an 18-6 record. Craig averaged 11 points and four assists per game while shooting 48 percent from the field including 44 percent from 3-point range and 88 percent from the line. For her efforts, she was named to the Second Team All-Mississippi Valley Conference.
“Dani is a very smart basketball player who can play both point guard and shooting guard, and seemed to be under the radar because of her injury,” said West High Head Coach BJ Mayer. “She can contribute to the team by scoring and getting her teammates involved with her decision making.” Mayer added, “Cal State Fullerton is getting a great basketball player who is a student of the game, and a great role model for others.”
