West High to host mini-dance marathon Jan. 19
IOWA CITY– The second annual West High Mini-Dance Marathon (WHSDM) will take place on Sunday, Jan. 19, from 1-6 p.m. in the Iowa City West High School Cafeteria. In 2013, the inaugural WHSDM raised over $21,000 that went towards the final total at the University of Iowa Dance Marathon’s Big Event, which raises money for the UI Children’s Hospital and children battling pediatric cancer.
West High’s student-run event strives to provide an experience for its dancers that is as close to the University’s event as possible. Families who have received Dance Marathon support during their child’s cancer treatment at UI Children’s Hospital will share their experiences and provide motivation throughout the event. Team captains have formed 17 teams and nearly 250 WHS students are expected to participate as dancers. Each dancer has been challenged to raise $50. Visitors are welcome at the event for a minimum donation of $5.
This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000 and if it is met, Jennifer Secrist, Paul Breitbach, Jeff Conner, and Matt Harding have committed to be part of a head shaving presentation at the end of the event at approximately 5:45 p.m.
