West High ready for battle on the mat

Experience solidifies West High wrestling for upcoming season

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The 2013-14 season was stellar in many ways for the Iowa City West High Trojan wrestlers, with five state meet qualifiers, a 23-7 dual meet record and a 12-1 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) record. In addition, the Trojans were fifth in the state dual meet and placed seventh overall in the State Individual Wrestling Meet.
Coach Mark Reiland, in his 16th year at West and with a career record of 384-62-1, said his Trojans “should be a solid dual team, with many guys having varsity experience.” Reiland backs up that statement with eight returning starters: Donovan Doyle, John Milani, Jakeb Bakken, Mitch Yoerger, Tanner Rohweder, Alex Aguirre, Nate Kelsay and Carter Rohweder.
Milani, Bakken, Yoerger and Tanner Rohweder are seniors, while Doyle and Kelsay are juniors, and Aguirre and Carter Rohweder are sophomores. Doyle, at 195 pounds, placed seventh in the state meet and posted a 46-14 record last year. Milani, at 170 pounds, placed fifth at state and had a 46-18 record, while Bakken was a state qualifier with a 38-20 record. Bakken is listed at 132 pounds. Yoerger is at 220 pounds and went 29-19 last year; Tanner Rohweder took fourth at state with a 26-7 record on the season and is listed at 120 pounds. Aguirre, a 106-pounder, had a 22-34 record last year, Kelsay is shown at 152 pounds and was a state qualifier with a 25-31 record while Carter Rohweder is listed at 138 pounds with a 17-12 showing last year.
Also back on the mats are returning letter-winners Kevin Dowell, a 220-pound senior with a 9-5 record, Aaron Stumpf, a 126-pound junior with a 14-20 record, and Sage Wisner, a 138-pound junior with a 7-24 record.
The Trojans welcome newcomers Nelson Brands (freshman), Tyler Yoerger (sophomore), Ben Bertell (junior) and Blake Moser (senior) to the lineup.
Looking at the MVC, Reiland said the teams that are typically at or near the top are likely to be there again. “Linn-Mar, Cedar Rapids Prairie and Cedar Rapids Jefferson should all be strong again,” he said. Cedar Falls and Dubuque Hempstead could also contend for a conference title, he said, while Dubuque Wahlert, Cedar Rapids Xavier and Cedar Rapids Kennedy, “should all be improved.”
The season begins for West on Thursday, Dec. 4, with a dual meet at home with the Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier. Both varsity and junior varsity reserves will compete starting at 6 p.m.
