West High varsity girls’ golf preview

IOWA CITY– So far, the 2018 season has been one of adapting for the Iowa City West High girls varsity golf team. The Women of Troy, under Coach Mary Goodfellow and assistant coach Don Bristow, has had to adapt to miserable weather conditions, the loss to graduation of seasoned veterans and the loss of many junior varsity (JV) players to Liberty High. Also, the squad is adapting to a new home, as this will be the first season of calling the Finkbine Golf Course the home of the Women of Troy.
One veteran lost to graduation is Jordan Amelon, a four-time state qualifier who had a nine-hole average of 41.67 last year with a low score of 39. Her 18-hole average was 80.60 with a low score of 71.
Also gone are Allison and Ashley Bys. Ashley had a nine-hole average of 55 with a low score of 50 and an 18-hole average of 103.80 with a low of 97 while Allison’s nine-hole average was 56.17 with a low score of 52 and an 18-hole average of 104.00 with a low score of 92.
Ellie Kouba, a junior, returns to the lineup as a team captain this year. Kouba shot a nine-hole average of 51.40 over five matches last year with a 45 for her best game, and had a 95.50 average in four 18-hole games with 85 for her best effort. Also back is sophomore Rylee Fay, who had a nine-hole average of 63.20 with a 56 for her best game along with an 18-hole average of 118.60 with a best game of 90.
Julia Austin is also a team captain this season for a young squad, which will be joined by sophomore Claudia Chia.
West High was third in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) last year.
“We will be looking for three new young players to step right into that varsity lineup,” Woodward said. “We will for the first time be playing Finkbine, which will be a fun challenge for all.”
The season was set to open on Tuesday, April 3, at St. Andrews Golf Course in Cedar Rapids in a dual with Cedar Rapids Xavier. West High’s first home meet is set for Thursday, April 5 (weather permitting), against Liberty at 3:15 p.m. The Women of Troy’s second and final home meet is scheduled for Thursday, April 26, as Dubuque Wahlert, Waterloo East and Xavier visit at 3:15 p.m.
