IOWA CITY– The West High varsity boys basketball team posted its 44th consecutive win Tuesday night with a 67-34 pounding of their rival, the Little Hawks, at City High.
The Trojans jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first period and were up 36-14 at the half.
Three Trojans, Jeremy Morgan, Wyatt Lohaus and Austin Swank were in double-digits with 19 points for Morgan while Swank had 14 and Lohaus contributed 13 to the cause. Jason Stewart had an 8-point game, Myzeah Batie-Gaddy scored 6, Chike Ukah had 4 and David Dileo put in 3. Morgan sank a trio of 3-pointers as well.
West was without standout Dondre Alexander, who was sidelined while serving a seven-game suspension for an unspecified violation of school policy.
The win gave West an 18-0 record.
The Women of Troy lost in a heartbreaker the night before, also at City, falling 46-44. City had a 12-10 lead after the first period but the Women of Troy held a 1-point lead at the half, up 24-23. The third period saw West go on a 14-8 run, good for a 38-31 lead going into the final period. The Little Hawks put up 15 points while holding West to only six for the win.
Ally Disterhoft again led West, putting in 21 points. Danielle Craig had a 10-point night, Mikaela Morgan had 6, Lauren Larson added 5 and Kristina Bauer rounded-out the scorers with 2 points.
The loss dropped the Women of Troy to a 15-5 record.
The games were the second meeting this season of the crosstown rivals. On Friday, Dec. 21, the girls lost 52-65 while the boys won 69-39.
The squads have the potential to meet again in postseason play. For the girls, the regional final on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Cedar Rapids Prairie could be the next encounter. West will play the winner of a first-round battle between Davenport Central and Bettendorf (Wednesday, Feb. 13), on Saturday, Feb. 16. At the same time, City High will do battle with Clinton.
On the boys’ side the Trojans have a first round bye in Substate No. 6 and will face the winner of a Monday, Feb. 18, match-up between City and Cedar Rapids Prairie on Friday, Feb. 22, at home. The substate final has three potential venues at this point according to the Iowa High School Athletic Association. If Burlington is playing, the game will be at Muscatine. Otherwise it is set for Prairie if the Prairie Hawks are playing. If not, West gets the home court advantage.
