West stays perfect on the road; Trojans’ pounding offense saves the night
DUBUQUE– The Rams of Dubuque Senior High School put up quite a fight Friday, Sept. 27, as they hosted the Trojans of Iowa City West on Dalzell Field in an MVC-Mississippi Division contest. West was defending its 4-0 record, while the Rams entered the fray with a 1-3 showing, after having knocked-off Linn-Mar 28-13 in week two action.
The Trojans kept their perfect record, holding-off the Rams and ram-rodding a ground attack for a 32-20 win.
Micah Kelsay pounded the ball 132 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the West ground assault. Quarterback Nate Boland kept the ball 14 times for 29 yards, Anthony Batie got the hand-off once for nine yards while Kevin Dowell and Tyler Eads both had one carry for six yards each. Devin Raffensperger hauled the mail eight times for 23 yards.
Boland completed 11 of 15 passes in the air attack with Batie taking four for 66 yards and a touchdown, Kelsay caught three for 25 and Oliver Martin, a freshman, caught four for 44 yards.
Kelsay and Conner Greene led the defensive effort with five tackles each while Dowell, Tyler Hebl, John Milani, Ben Mirr and Austin Stumpff had four apiece. Dowell and Kelsay were also credited with wrecking the Rams’ quarterback with sacks.
In the wake of Friday night’s contests, West remained the only unbeaten team in the division. City High is at 4-1 while Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Dubuque Hempstead are 3-2. Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Waterloo East are both 0-4 going into the second half of the season. The Trojans will host Hempstead Friday, Oct. 4, for homecoming, travel to City High on Friday, Oct. 11, for the annual Battle for the Boot and venture to Cedar Rapids on Friday, Oct. 18, to face the J-Hawks at Kingston Stadium before closing-out the regular season at home against Waterloo East on Friday, Oct. 25.
