Will the girls be far behind?
SOLON– The Lady Spartan soccer team ended regular season play with a successful Senior Night.
Solon rolled to a 3-1 victory over the Regina Regals in a hard-fought, weather-delayed game on Tuesday, May 24. Early in the game, Alison McKinnie scored on a perfect pass from Danielle Herdliska. The rest of the first half the Spartans and Regals battled equally on both ends. By halftime, Mother Nature took over and sent everyone ducking for cover. Play resumed over an hour later with showers still falling.
This Solon team seems to respond well to rain. They came out shooting. Less than two minutes into the second half, Regina’s goal keeper was drawn away from the net and McKinnie took advantage of the opening. Not long after, McKinnie scored one last goal off a nice run. Goalkeeper Nikki Sedlacek had a terrific afternoon. She and the rest of the defense had a lot of pressure put on them by the Regals, but they managed to keep control of the game in the Spartans’ favor all evening.
Solon recognized nine seniors for their outstanding contribution to Solon girls soccer: Nikki Sedlacek, Tori Takes, Brogan Messer, Danielle Herdiska, Erica Singkofer, Sadie Walkner, Mallory Hufford, Moriah Miller and long-time team manager, Chris Greazel.
Solon will take on Regina again in the first round of regional playoffs Friday, June 3, at 6 p.m. in Solon. If victorious, the Lady Spartans would need only one more win, June 6 in the Regional Final at Eldridge, to qualify for the state tournament.
