Women of Troy mow down Mustangs

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy remained perfect in the early part of the season with a 4-0 record after knocking off Mason City, Davenport Assumption and Cedar Rapids Prairie.
The fourth victim of B.J. Mayer and his team was Dubuque Hempstead, which fell 53-33 at West High Friday, Dec. 5, in a Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) match-up.
Mikaela Morgan led West High with 12 points in an offensive effort that saw 10 players putting up points. Grace Tafolla was the only other West player in double digits with 10 points.
West took the first quarter 17-7 with baskets from Bella Lozano-Dobbs, Logan Cook, Emily Halverson, Tafolla and a 3-pointer from Morgan. Rachel Saunders grabbed a rebound and dumped it in to score in the second period, which was capped by a 3-pointer from Dani Craig. The Women of Troy took a 33-16 advantage at the halftime break.
Jessie Harder closed out the third quarter for West with a two-point basket giving West a 48-27 lead. Three free throws from Ali Tauchen and Andrea Morgan, coupled with a basket by Saunders comprised the West High offensive effort in the fourth period.
The Mustangs fell to 1-2 for the season thus far, after dominating Clinton in the season opener and falling, 51-31, to Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
The Women of Troy are on the road Friday, Dec. 12, at Waterloo West, and head back to Waterloo on Tuesday, Dec. 16, to face East High before returning home on Friday, Dec. 19, to entertain Cedar Rapids Washington for the last game of 2014.
