Women of Troy put up two more wins

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy moved to a 13-1 standing in Class 5A with a pair of road wins over Bettendorf and Cedar Rapids Prairie.
West traveled to Bettendorf on Tuesday, Jan. 17, for a non-conference match-up with the Lady Bulldogs and prevailed, 69-45. West led 18-12 at the end of the first period, and thanks to a 24-point barrage in the second quarter, led 42-21 at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored West High 11-8 in the third period but the Women of Troy took a 50-32 advantage into the final quarter. It was Bettendorf’s second loss of the season.
Rachel Saunders had a 22-point night with three 3-point baskets to lead West as eight players contributed points.

The Women of Troy were ranked third in Class 3A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s weekly rankings released Thursday, Jan. 19. Indianola (12-0) was the number-one team in the state in 5A, followed by rival City High (13-0) and The Women of Troy (12-1 at the time). Bettendorf dropped to 14th with a 10-2 record.
West High increased its record to 13-1 with a 62-39 pounding of Cedar Rapids Prairie on Friday, Jan. 20, in the Hawks’ nest. West pounded Prairie 70-39 in Iowa City on Dec. 20.
The Women of Troy pulled off an 18-11 lead at the end of the first period and were ahead 34-22 at halftime. West outscored Prairie 19-8 in the third period to lead 53-30 going into the final quarter. Rachel Saunders led West High with 17 points and found support from Katie McGrane (13 points including three 3-point baskets) and Lauren Zacharias (10 points). Eight West High players scored in the game. Lauren Zacharias racked up six steals in the contest.
West visits the Cedar Falls Tigers on Friday, Jan. 27, and hosts Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Dubuque Senior rolls into Iowa City on Friday, Feb. 3, before the final two regular games of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Linn-Mar and Friday, Feb. 10, at Waterloo West. Regional play begins on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
