IOWA CITY– “Flash” is gone, but far from forgotten. Austin Schroeder, better known to the Iowa City West High community as “Flash,” was born on Aug. 13, 1999, and died on April 28, 2015, from cancer. “Flash” was diagnosed with T-Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, Stage 3, in April of 2014 and lost a valiant fight against the disease a year later.
“Flash” was remembered Friday, Dec. 1, as the West High Women of Troy dedicated the first home game of the regular season in memory of him.
West High, the number-two ranked team in the state in Class 5A, defeated No. 12 in Class 4A Cedar Rapids Xavier, 49-30.
West racked up a 10-2 lead in the first period sparked by field goals from Emma Koch, Paige Beckner and Caily Morgan, and a 3-pointer from Lauren Zacharias. The Saints recovered and trailed West 12-9 at the end of the period.
A three-point basket by freshman Audrey Koch in the second period made it 19-9 for West, and the squad enjoyed a 26-17 advantage at halftime.
The Women of Troy kept the Saints at arm’s length throughout the third period, taking a 39-24 lead going into the final eight minutes. A Morgan steal and layup made it 30-18 early in the quarter while Emma Koch bookended the period with two points (pair of free throws) to open the period, and a field goal to close it.
Zacharias made a steal and layup in the final eight minutes to make it a 45-24 contest while freshman Maytayia Tellis dropped in a two-point shot to close out the ballgame.
Emma Koch led West High with 15 points while Logan Cook knocked in 10 and Audrey Koch added seven. Zacharias and Morgan contributed five points each, Paige Beckner put up four points on the night and Tellis had two.
West High’ junior varsity (JV) squad, with six dressed out for the game, defeated Xavier 42-34 with 14 points from sophomore Grace Schneider.
