Women of Troy sweep Waterloo’s Trojans

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy improved to 14-12 overall while getting their eighth consecutive win Tuesday, June 20, with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Waterloo East Trojans. West High won 9-5 and 6-3 over the 7-21 Trojans and handed their guests their fifth straight loss.
The Trojans surprised the Women of Troy with a solo home run in the top of the first inning of game one, but West High regrouped and put up three runs in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles from Skylar Ryan, Brooke Goodman and Kaitlyn Fangmann. East High knotted the game with two runs in the top of the second and West answered with a two-RBI single by Darby Donovan, which scored Eva Burbidge and Taleah Smith.
The Trojans threatened the Women of Troy with loaded bases in the third inning, but only brought one runner in on a sacrifice to cut West High’s lead back to one run. The Women of Troy loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth as Cynthia Hull, Kiahna Hill and Kyra Stoll all singled. Smith drove a three-RBI triple deep into the outfield to boost West High’s lead to 8-4.
Again the Trojans proved troublesome as they brought a runner home on an error in the top of the sixth ahead of West’s final run and the 9-5 victory.
Abby Henderson and Kayli Baldwin split the pitching duties for West in the opener.
The nightcap was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Burbidge drove in Donovan and Miranda Jones with a single for a 2-0 lead. Goodman nailed a 2-RBI single with two outs making it 4-0. East High answered with two runs in the top of the fourth while Fangmann and Smith drove in one run each in the bottom of the sixth to give West a 6-2 lead. Kylie Heisdorfer went the distance for the Women of Troy in the circle.
West hosts Dubuque Senior Thursday, June 29, for a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader and will host their annual Classic tournament Friday and Saturday, June 30 and July 1, at the University of Iowa’s Softball Complex. The action starts at 1 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The regular season wraps up Monday, July 3, at Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader ahead of Class 5A regional action starting on Thursday, July 6. The regional semifinal is set for Saturday, July 8, with West High taking on Davenport West at Davenport West. The Class 5A Region 7 final is set for Tuesday, July 11, at the highest remaining ranked team’s site with a trip to the 2017 state championships in Fort Dodge on the line. City High, Davenport North and Cedar Rapids Kennedy are potential opponents in the top half of the Region 7 bracket.
